Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) Columns and Cartridges
Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) is a powerful technique used in analytical chemistry to purify, concentrate, and isolate specific compounds or analytes from a sample. It serves as a crucial step in applications like toxicology tests, environmental monitoring, and pharmaceutical research, among others. The technique uses solid media contained in columns or cartridges to selectively bind the target analytes and separate them from other substances, ensuring a cleaner sample for subsequent analysis.

Description:
SHIMSEN Styra NH2 is an amino bonded silica cartridge and can act either as a weak anion exchanger (aqueous solutions) or polar phase sorbent (non-polar organic solutions). When conditioned with a non-polar solvent, e.g., hexane, it tends to form hydrogen bond with any molecule containing -OH, -NH, or -SH functional groups. In an aqueous environment with pH 7.8 or less, it can function as a weak anion exchanger. Retention mechanism: Polar interaction and weak anion exchange Matrix: Particle size 50 μm, pore size 60 Å Spherical silica particles with a specific surface area of 500 m2/g Function groups: Cyanopropyl Endcapped: No Carbon load (C%): 3.5% pKa: 9.8 (the pKa of its conjugated acid) Application: It can be used to separate structural isomers; extract compounds with polar groups from lipid samples; remove polar compounds (such as carbohydrates, pigments), organic acids, and phenols, etc. in pesticide residue analysis. Description:
SHIMSEN Styra FL-PR is based on natural Flori silica (MgO • SiO2) and is used for the recovery or cleanup of polar substances from non-polar solvents. This sorbent is high in polarity and can be used to extract polar compounds from non-polar solutions. The larger particle size (200 μm) of the sorbent enables fast flow for large sample volumes and is therefore an attractive alternative to silica if the sample matrix is particularly viscous. FL-PR can not only separate chlorinated insecticides, but also be used in AOAC, EPA and other methods. In addition, FL-PR is an excellent replacement for alumina cartridge when the acidic nature of alumina affects the extraction effect. Retention mechanism: Polar interaction Adsorbent: Magnesium silicate particles with size of 150-200 μm Function groups: Silicon Hydroxy Application: Environmental samples and pesticide residue analysis Food: SHIMSEN Styra FL-PR is suitable for the purification of pesticide residues in crops Product Number Specification Pack Size 380-00862-01 500 mg / 6 mL 30 380-00862-02 500 mg / 3 mL 50 380-00862-03 5 g / 20 mL 20 380-00862-04 2 g / 6 mL 30 380-00862-05 2 g / 12 mL 20 380-00862-06 200 mg / 3 mL 50 380-00862-07 1000 mg / 6 mL 30 380-00862-08 100 mg / 1 mL 100 380-00862-09 10 g / 60 mL 10

Separation Modes
- Mixed Mode Reversed Phase Cation Exchange: Ideal for the extraction of cationic compounds from complex matrices, this mode combines the selectivity of reversed-phase and cation-exchange mechanisms. It's widely used in pharmaceuticals to isolate basic drugs from plasma or urine.
- Proprietary: The proprietary mode of SPE columns offers unique selectivity and retention properties, often tailored for specialised applications. Information on this mode is typically proprietary to maintain a competitive edge.
- Mixed Mode Reversed Phase Anion Exchange: Best suited for separating anionic compounds, this mode is often used in environmental analysis for isolating acidic pesticides from soil or water samples.
- Reversed Phase: This is the most commonly used mode for a wide range of applications of SPE columns including peptide purification, drug screening, and more. It's particularly effective for non-polar and moderately polar compounds.
- Normal Phase: Typically used for the separation of polar compounds, normal phase is often chosen for applications like the isolation of flavonoids from plant extracts.
- Cation Exchange: Specialised for targeting positively charged compounds, this mode in SPE columns is used in areas like food testing for the extraction of amines and amino acids.
- Anion Exchange: Geared towards the extraction of negatively charged analytes, it's extensively used in water quality testing for substances like anionic surfactants.
- Carbon: Carbon mode offers high retention for non-polar to moderately polar compounds. It is especially useful in forensic applications for drug detection.
- Special: These SPE columns are designed for unique and specialised applications that don't fit into the conventional modes, like chiral separations or the isolation of large biomolecules.
Volume/mL
Our SPE columns and cartridges come in an array of volume sizes to suit various application needs. Specifically, the available volumes include 1 mL, 3 mL, 6 mL, 12 mL, 20 mL, and 60 mL. This range of sizes gives you the flexibility to select the most suitable volume for your unique analytical requirements, thereby enhancing both efficiency and reliability in your work.
Choosing The Right SPE Column Or Cartridge
Choosing the right SPE column or cartridge is critical for ensuring optimal analytical results. Here are some key factors to consider:
- Sample Matrix Considerations: The complexity and nature of your sample matrix dictate which column or cartridge will best suit your needs. Some SPE columns are specially designed for aqueous samples, while others may be suited for organic solvents or biological matrices.
- Analyte Characteristics: It's crucial to understand the characteristics of the analytes you wish to isolate. Parameters like size, polarity, and charge significantly impact which type of stationary phase will be most effective. For instance, an SPE column designed for hydrophobic interactions would be unsuitable for polar compounds.
- Column Dimension and Compatibility: The physical dimensions of the column, including volume and sorbent weight are important. length and diameter, as well as compatibility with your existing SPE system, are important. Incorrect sizing can lead to problems like poor recovery. increased back pressure and inefficient separation. The luer slip design ensures compatibility with various vacuum manifolds.
